Success during the season largely depends on the preparation done in the preseason.


But what does a successful preseason look like?


It’s not just about running laps and lifting weights; it’s about a comprehensive approach that addresses the three key pillars of success: physical conditioning, skill development, and recovery.


Let’s break down these three pillars that form the bedrock of a successful preseason for rugby players:


1. Physical Conditioning

Rugby is a physically demanding sport that requires players to be strong, fast, agile, and resilient. A solid preseason conditioning program is essential to help players build the endurance and strength needed to excel on the field.


Key Components:


  • Strength Training: Focusing on functional strength that translates to on-field performance is crucial. Rugby players need power in their legs for sprinting and tackling, as well as upper body strength for scrummaging and ball handling.


    Compound exercises like squats, deadlifts, and bench presses are important.


  • Endurance: Aerobic and Anerobic training helps improve cardiovascular endurance. This is important for maintaining energy levels throughout the match, especially in high-intensity moments.


  • Agility and Speed: Explosiveness off the mark, quick reflexes and fast direction changes are vital.

    Plyometric exercises, sprints, and agility drills should be incorporated into the training schedule.


2. Skill Development


While physical conditioning is vital, rugby players also need to sharpen their skills during preseason. The preseason is the time to refine technique, build muscle memory, and work on the finer details of the game.

  • Ball Handling: Passing, catching, and offloading under pressure are all essential skills. Drills that improve hand-eye coordination, passing accuracy, and decision-making will ensure players are ready for game situations.

3. Recovery


Recovery is often the most overlooked aspect of preseason training, yet it’s just as important as conditioning and skill development. Without proper recovery, players risk burnout, injury, and prolonged fatigue, which can undermine all the hard work done during training.


Key Components:

  • Rest and Sleep: Sleep is one of the most powerful recovery tools for athletes. Rugby players should aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night to allow muscles to repair and energy stores to be replenished.


  • Active Recovery: Active recovery sessions, such as light jogging, swimming, or yoga, help flush out lactic acid from the muscles and prevent stiffness. These activities promote circulation and flexibility.


  • Nutrition and Hydration: Proper nutrition is critical for muscle recovery and overall energy levels. A balanced diet with adequate protein, carbohydrates, fats, and vitamins will ensure that players stay fueled. Hydration is equally important to prevent cramping and to support recovery after intense sessions.


  • Injury Prevention: Preseason is the time to identify and address any pre-existing injuries or weaknesses. Regular physiotherapy, stretching, and strengthening exercises can help prevent injury and keep players in top form.
